India defeated Sri Lanka by innings and 171 runs before tea on third day of the 3rd Test Match at Pallekele and Whitewashed Sri Lanka by 3-0. This is the first time India have whitewashed the opposition in an away Test series of 3 or more matches.

Sri Lanka recommenced the day on the overnight score of 19/1 in their second innings (F/O), after being bowled out for 135 in their first innings with Kuldeep Yadav picking up four wickets in first innings helping his team to get a valuable lead in 1st innings. Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal (36), Angelo Mathews (35) and Niroshan Dickwella 41 runs were not enough to stop Sri Lanka from an innings defeat for the successive second time in the series as Sri Lanka were bundled out on 181 in the 2nd innings.
Mohammed Shami 3/32 and Ravichandran Ashwin 4/68 destroyed the back bone of Sri Lanka in the 2nd innings while Umesh Yadav picked 2 wickets and Kuldeep Yadav ended up picking 1 wicket.
India put up mammoth total of 487 runs on the board while batting first as Shikhar Dhawan (119) and K L Rahul (85) added 188 runs partnership for opening stand. But India lost their momentum by losing quick wickets and at one stage India was reduced on 339/7 but Hardik Pandya blistering innings 108 runs of 96 balls helped team to reach big total.
Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan was India’s top scorer in the series with 358 runs with two centuries under his belt. Cheteshwar Pujara with 309 runs was India’s second highest run-getter. Ravichandran Ashwin was India’s highest wicket taker in the series with 17 wickets from 3 matches, Ravindra Jadeja, who missed out on the final Test due to a ban, finished second with 13 wickets from two matches.
Shikhar Dhawan was adjudged the Man of the Series while Hardik Pandya was awarded the Man of the Match award. India has won 8th series on trot under the captaincy.
